Kilbarchan General Society is one of the oldest if not the oldest charity of its type in Scotland. Established in 1765 by 24 Heritors and merchants it has been helping the people and organisations of the village ever since. The Society raises funds by hosting events, concerts and dinners, our annual Burns Supper and Sportsmans Dinner are usually sold out.
The General Society installed the first street lighting in the village and purchased the village horse drawn fire pump, this has been conserved by the Society, as the 250 year old wheels have succumbed to age they have been rebuilt using traditional techniques, the pump is now housed in the Donald Malcolm Heritage Centre. Every year we disburse funds to local charities and good causes, we work with Accord Hospice, St Vincents Hospice, Erskine Veterans charity and are building a closer relationship with Beatson Cancer Care.
Membership is open to all persons of good character and currently costs £20 for a life time.
